A friend of mine — a man who oversaw a chain of retail stores along the east coast — once told me that when a young couple came to him, wanting to open a store together, he would often discourage them.
You don’t want to do this, he would say.
They, naturally, would object, saying they had the money, the location, the energy, and the skills. So why wouldn’t he want them to open a new store?
The answer: Because the effort the two of them would put into getting the store up and running would likely damage their relationship — perhaps even ruining their marriage.
Sure, they would be doing lots of things together. But doing, doing, doing is not the same as being. And every relationship needs times of just being together.
Even your relationship with God needs this.
Perhaps this is one of the hidden faults owned by the older son in Jesus’ Parable of the Prodigal Son.
Perhaps all of us struggle with doing things for God instead of spending time with God.
